Celebrated Marathi Drama 'Sabar Bonda' Set for Indian Release

The highly praised Marathi film Sabar Bonda, directed by Rohan Kanawade, is making its way back to India. This poignant drama explores a forbidden romance between two men in rural Maharashtra and had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Notably, Sabar Bonda (Cactus Pears) earned the prestigious World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic, marking a historic achievement as the first Indian feature to receive this honor.

In his debut feature, Kanawade showcases performances by Bhushaan Manoj, Suraaj Suman, and Jayshri Jagtap in pivotal roles. The film is set to be released in India by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media on September 19, just in time for the selection process for India’s Oscar entry.

During a January interview, Kanawade shared insights into his challenging upbringing and the obstacles he overcame to bring Sabar Bonda to life. He reflected on his father's unwavering support, stating, 'My father worked as a driver for most of his life. Despite his struggles, he encouraged me to pursue my passion for filmmaking.'
